Overall series design
This series that I am doing is sort of a tutorial for myself/a sample project for others/game design tool. In college I remember there was this game design question about you have a Sock, an Orange, and a Tire. Now make a game out of these three objects. I thought putting the orange in the sock and having to do a spinning toss through a hanging tire. What you learn is that 90% of people think of some way the orange will be thrown through the tire. So knowing that, how do we think outside of the box for a new idea.
This being said, I am well aware that jumping over flying circles is not anything new in the way of game design. However, when I though about how to make a game with just jumping. The options are actually pretty limited. We can jump onto objects, we can jump over object, and we can jump into objects. Without movement we are pretty limited (in my opinion to a jump only game). So something that I did in this game I have never done before is recorded sound effects.
It was actually pretty easy and it turned out a lot better than I expected it to. The whoosh of the ball flying, the jump audio, the score, and the button clicks were all made in about 10 minutes with my voice and my water bottle.
I plan to do some additional posts of this series Square & Circle + Single Mechanic. At the end of it, I am going to flush the postmortems and compile all the mechanics into a single game. My thought is that maybe by breaking it down into small projects, I can generate some cool mechanic ideas without being overwhelmed by the entire project from A to B.
